Netherlands announces dolphin breeding ban

As a coalition of organisations working to end dolphin captivity across Europe, we welcome the announcement of a breeding ban for captive dolphins in the Netherlands. This means the dolphins currently held at Dolfinarium Harderwijk are expected to be the last generation of dolphins kept in captivity in the country.

State Secretary Silvio Erkens has acknowledged that the welfare of dolphins in captivity cannot be sufficiently guaranteed – an important recognition of the challenges these highly intelligent, wide-ranging marine mammals face in captive environments.

This announcement adds momentum to a growing movement across Europe and beyond. With tighter legislation introduced in countries including France and Belgium, alongside measures in Mexico, the tide is beginning to turn against keeping dolphins in captivity for entertainment.

Every step forward brings us closer to a Europe where dolphins are no longer bred, confined or displayed for human amusement. Together, we will continue working towards a future where these remarkable animals can thrive in their natural marine environments, free from the restrictions of captivity.
