Cecil, a bottlenose dolphin held at Kolmården Zoo for public display, was euthanised on 21 August 2026 at the age of 42.2 years.
Reports state that Cecil had recently suffered an infection. Although the infection cleared, his health remained poor. He began showing signs of ageing and his immune system was failing, leading veterinarians to decide to euthanise him.
Cecil spent more than four decades in captivity, living in an environment fundamentally different from the ocean and held for public entertainment.
His death once again raises important questions about the morality of keeping dolphins in captivity, and the cost to these animals when their lives are shaped around human entertainment rather than their natural environment. For this reason, Dolphinaria-Free Europe will continue to campaign to ensure that this is the last generation of dolphins and whales held in captivity.
