Wikie and Keijo must not go to Spain

Dolphinaria-Free Europe has continued its engagement with government authorities in both France and Spain amid ongoing uncertainty about the future of the orcas, Wikie and Keijo. Recent developments indicate that the option of transferring the animals to Spain may once again be under active consideration, raising fresh concerns about their long-term welfare and the legal framework governing such a move.

It is important to note that Spain’s CITES Scientific Authority has previously refused to authorise the import of these orcas. The decision was based on an assessment that the proposed receiving facility, Loro Parque, does not have the capacity or appropriate conditions required to house and care for them adequately. This determination remains a critical factor in evaluating any renewed proposals.

In light of these circumstances, Dolphinaria-Free Europe has formally requested clarification from the Spanish Ministry. Specifically, the organisation is seeking confirmation that no future applications for import permits will be entertained—particularly in cases where any export permit issued by France may fall short of meeting the applicable legal and regulatory standards.

Ensuring full compliance with international conservation agreements is essential. Above all, any decision regarding Wikie and Keijo must place their welfare at the forefront and be guided by robust scientific assessment and legal integrity.
