Morgan gives birth to second calf

Morgan, orca, Loro Parque, Tenerife, captivity, end captivity, dolphinaria-free europe, orca birth

Orca Morgan who was rescued 15 years ago after being discovered alone in the Wadden Sea has again given birth to a male calf at Loro Parque, Tenerife.  Initially taken to Dolfinarium Harderwijk in the Netherlands, Morgan was later relocated to the facility on the island of Tenerife, despite concerns from animal welfare organisations. In 2017 Morgan became pregnant and gave birth to a female calf, later named Ula. She died aged just two and is one of four orcas who have died at Loro Parque since 2021. The original European CITES certificate approving Morgan’s transfer stipulated she would be used for research purpose, not for shows or as part of a breeding programme, and this latest birth is not one that we can be celebrating as although being born in captivity does not take away the beauty of a baby orca, it’s deeply troubling that this young male may be subjected to life in a tank for some years.
