Although the move is still some time away, we are pleased to report that France has confirmed that orcas Wikie and her son Keijo will be transferred to a marine sanctuary for cetaceans in Nova Scotia, Canada, by summer 2026.
There are many hurdles to overcome before the sanctuary is ready to receive them, including the construction of sea enclosures and other major infrastructure. Whilst the project has faced criticism and negative views over the years, the well-being of these two marine mammals remains the highest priority. This project represents the most appropriate and compassionate solution for Wikie and Keijo, who have spent years languishing in concrete tanks solely for public entertainment. They will now have the opportunity to experience natural ocean currents and a more enriching environment. The need for such facilities is urgent, as many countries and jurisdictions are introducing legislation to end cetacean captivity. Many captive orcas have never lived in the wild and lack the skills needed to hunt or integrate into wild pods. Marine sanctuaries provide lifetime care in a natural ocean setting, where animals are still fed, monitored, and cared for by experienced professionals.
Positive news for two orcas who have spent their lives in cramped, concrete tanks.
